As someone who’s spent years reviewing pet gadgets, from GPS collars to automated feeders, I’ve had the opportunity to test nearly every major smart litter box on the market. In fact, because of my work as a gear and tech columnist, I often receive product samples from brands, so I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the completely unnecessary when it comes to smart litter boxes. But here’s the thing: I don’t just write about the newest or flashiest tools, I put them through real-world testing, with my own pets, in my own home.

Some promise the world, but turn out to be noisy, unreliable, or just plain confusing to use. Others look sleek online but are too small for a full-grown cat or lack basic features like odour control or safety sensors.

I care deeply about what I recommend, because as a pet parent myself, I rely on honest, well-tested guidance to make decisions that affect your home and your animals’ wellbeing. That’s why I take this part of my job seriously. I only spotlight products that I would confidently use with my own rescue cat, Milo.

After months of testing, comparing, and re-testing multiple models side by side, I’ve identified what separates a gimmick from a genuinely useful upgrade. If you’re thinking about making the leap to a smart litter box, these are things you want to avoid, the features you absolutely want to look for, and the one model I personally trust the most.

Why this Litter Box is changing the game

When it comes to cat care, there are products that are “nice to have” — and then there are products that genuinely change your routine. The SmartNestr LitterBox Ultra II™ falls firmly into the second category.

I’ve reviewed dozens of litter boxes over the years, and while some offer smart features, few combine real intelligence, safety, and convenience the way this one does. From the moment it arrived, the Ultra II stood out, not because it promised the world, but because it actually delivered on the things that matter: odour control, reliable self-cleaning, and a design cats feel comfortable using.

What impressed me most wasn’t just the automation, but how well thought-out every feature is. The sealed waste bin and anti-stick interior keep smells and mess to a minimum, while the app integration brings a whole new level of control. It's rare to find a pet product that simplifies life for you and contributes to your cat’s wellbeing, but this is one of them.

At just under £500, it’s an investment, yes. But compared to some of the other market leaders that cost more than triple the price, the LitterBox Ultra II™ offers exceptional value. You’re getting premium functionality without the premium markup. And for multi-cat homes or busy pet parents? It's the upgrade you didn’t know you needed.

This isn’t just another smart litter box. It’s a smarter way to live with cats. Click here to check stock at SmartNestr.

The Litter Robot 4

My #2 Pick

A well made, sleek option, which comes with the known name brand, and therefore quite frankly overpriced.

My thoughts

It would be remiss not to mention the Litter-Robot 4, a widely respected name in the self-cleaning litter box space, and one that has earned a loyal following for good reason. It offers an exceptionally polished user experience, with features like real-time waste level monitoring, automatic multi-cat detection, and a companion app that’s among the most intuitive available. The odour control system is strong, the cleaning cycle is smooth and quiet, and the internal space is well-designed to encourage regular use even in multi-cat homes.

There are, however, a few things to consider. The unit is physically large, which might be a challenge for those in smaller flats or homes with limited floor space. It also performs best when used with branded accessories, such as liners and carbon filters, which can add to the ongoing cost of ownership. And while the engineering is impressive, the price point is high: over £1,500 including accessories and shipping. For some pet owners, that investment makes perfect sense. For others, it may be more than what’s necessary for reliable litter box automation.

PETKIT Pura X

My #3 Pick

My thoughts

The Petkit Pura X is one of the more visually striking smart litter boxes on the market. Its smooth, futuristic design and sleek matte finish give it immediate shelf appeal, and it promises advanced features like health tracking and climate control. In testing, it impressed initially: the app interface is modern and appealing, and the automatic rake system did keep litter clean, once the setup was perfected.

Things I liked:

  • Elegant, minimalist design looks modern and high-end

  • App dashboard includes health tracking (urination frequency, duration) and temperature control

  • Compact sizing is ideal for small flats or spaces where footprint matters

Things I didn't like:

  • The app can feel unintuitive, with multiple nested menus and occasional lag during setup

  • It’s sensitive on litter types—certain clumping or tofu litters can cause frequent rake jams or clogging

  • Litter bin capacity is smaller than many competitors, meaning more frequent attention

  • Some users report noise during cleaning cycles when used on low-quality flooring

Best For

Owners who prioritise aesthetics and health metrics in a compact package, and are willing to experiment with litter types and troubleshooting during setup. Petkit Pura X can be a solid pick for design-conscious pet owners with one cat in a space-conscious home, but it doesn’t quite offer the reliability and simplicity of higher-tier models.
