🚨 What’s Going On?

A fresh wave of pet food recalls is hitting 2025, and it’s raising eyebrows (and empty kibble bowls) across the UK.

From raw diets flagged for avian influenza to mould and bacterial contamination in frozen meals, these recalls are a reminder that pet food safety remains a global not just concern.

1. Raw Chicken Formula: Bird Flu Hits the Headlines

In the US, multiple raw chicken products have been pulled following confirmed cases of H5N1 bird flu.

  • Wild Coast Raw’s “Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula” distributed across Washington and Oregon was voluntarily recalled in March 2025, with lot numbers 22660, 22664 (best before Dec 2025) linked to feline H5N1 infections; two cats died and another was treated Reddit+15Petful+15PetfoodIndustry+15.

  • Over on Reddit, users raised alarms:

“at least four have come down with bird flu… Wild Coast finally posted a statement” Reddit. And another confirmed multiple lot numbers were affected Reddit+4Reddit+4Petful+4.

These recalls have reignited discussion about High Pressure Processing (HPP): some brands claim their HPP treated raw meals kill H5N1, but others warn it’s not 100% certain Reddit+15Reddit+15Reddit+15.

There have also been reports involving US only brands like Northwest Naturals, where a cat died after swallowing H5N1 tainted frozen turkey raw food AVMA+9Reddit+9Los Angeles Times+9.

No cases have emerged in the UK but given international sourcing, pet owners need to stay vigilant.

2. Bacterial Danger: Salmonella & Listeria in Raw

Also in June 2025, Answers Pet Food issued a voluntary recall after routine microbial screening detected Salmonella and Listeria in some of its raw beef and chicken batches Los Angeles Times+4foodresearchlab.com+4Petful+4. Pets showed symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and lethargy classic signs of nasty pathogens.

3. Are UK Shelves Safe?

The Food Standards Agency continues to monitor imports, but no UK produced pet foods have been recalled in 2025. That means any contaminated imports are the current concern.

What UK Pet Owners Should Do

  1. Check your labels Look for affected batch numbers (Wild Coast #22660, #22664, etc.) or any recall notices on raw meals in particular, chicken or turkey formulas imported from the US.

  2. Stop feeding and quarantine If you spot a match, stop using the product immediately. Seal it in a bag and return it for a refund or dispose of it carefully.

  3. Clean thoroughly Disinfect bowls, storage containers, freezers and surfaces with hot, soapy water. Wash hands well afterward.

  4. Watch your pet’s health For avian flu: symptoms include fever, sneezing, breathing trouble, tremors or seizures foodresearchlab.com+15Petful+15PetfoodIndustry+15Poppy's Picnic+1Reddit+1. For Salmonella/Listeria: vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, lethargy . Call your vet if you see anything worrying.

  5. Think twice before feeding raw imports Unless you're certain it's HPP treated or from a trusted local supplier, an easily digestible cooked/wet kibble from a reputable brand might be a safer option.

Why Are These Recalls Happening?

  • H5N1 bird flu is an emerging zoonotic risk raw poultry may carry the virus before factories catch on Reddit+5Reddit+5Reddit+5.

  • Bacterial contamination is a classic hazard of raw feeding Salmonella and Listeria thrive in uncooked meats .

  • HPP processes aren’t uniformly regulated viral inactivation isn’t guaranteed under current protocols .

Cost & Safer Substitutes

Here’s a rough price guide (UK, early 2025):

  • Imported raw chicken/turkey mixes: £4–£6/kg

  • Premium wet food: £1–£1.50 per 400g can

  • Grain-free kibble: £3–£4/kg

Switching to trusted, UK manufactured brands with strong safety standards or cooked alternatives may cost slightly more, but can help avert vet bills and health scares.

Final Thoughts

While these recalls might sound alarming, they also show the system is alert, responsive and spreading the word. For UK pet owners, the key is awareness, checking labels, and having clean, safe backups on standby.
