Dog lovers, hold onto your leashes a widely used dog treat has been pulled from shelves following serious contamination concerns.

What began as a whisper from safety regulators has grown into a full blown recall affecting well known brands and leaving pet owners asking: is my pup at risk?

🧺 What’s Been Recalled?

Kasel Associated Industries, a Denver based manufacturer, has voluntarily recalled all its dog treat products sold across the USA and available in UK pet retailers and online outlets between 20 April and 19 September 2024. The wide ranging recall includes popular names such as Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Nature’s Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco, and Best Bully Stick items FOX 29 Philadelphia+6CBS News+6CBS News+6.

Although no human or canine illnesses have yet been reported, the threat is serious: salmonella contamination can cause nasty symptoms in both pets and people Dog Food Advisor+4CBS News+4CBS News+4.

Why Salmonella Is So Concerning 🦠

Salmonella isn’t just a tummy upset. In humans, it can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea (sometimes bloody), fever, and abdominal cramps. In rare cases, it progresses to severe conditions such as endocarditis or arterial infection CBS News+3CBS News+3International Business Times+3.

Our four legged friends aren’t spared: symptoms in dogs include diarrhoea (again, possibly bloody), fever, vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal pain. Disturbingly, even seemingly healthy dogs can carry and spread the bacteria without showing illness PetfoodIndustry+9CBS News+9New York Post+9.

  4. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the treats or packaging. Utensils and surfaces too.

  5. Watch your dog carefully for any signs of illness diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, unusual lethargy.

  6. Contact your vet if you observe symptoms, and see a doctor if you or anyone in your household feels ill.

A Wider Warning to UK Dog Owners

Though this recall stems from the US, many of these brands are marketed in the UK via high street pet shops and online retailers. Even if your label doesn’t match exactly, vigilance is key. Cost of Loyalty?

Many of these treats cost between £3–£8 a pack. It’s tempting to stock up when reduced, but this incident highlights that price isn’t everything. Safety always trumps savings and cleaning out contaminated stock now might save costly vet bills, or worse.

A Note on Treat Safety

If your dog has a taste for chewy delights, consider these safer substitutes:

  • Naturally air dried or freeze dried treats, ideally with minimal ingredients

  • Veterinary approved chews, certified by the UK’s Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association

  • Homemade options, like thinly sliced, oven dried chicken strips (only if vet approved)

Always store treats securely, use them within their expiry dates, and keep an eye on any unusual doggy behaviour after all, our canine companions can’t read “best by” labels.

Final Thoughts

Food safety isn’t just a human concern our pets rely entirely on us. This recall serves as a stark reminder: always check packaging, research brands, and act fast if anything seems off. A quick treat check could make all the difference.

Stay curious, stay safe and may your pup’s next treat be delicious and worry free.
